It’s like listening for the faintest echo.
Except with X-rays.
Many industries are facing challenges in NDT for composite materials. This becomes even more problematic when access to the structure is limited. We responded to this challenge by developing the EchoXRB.
This one-sided X-ray system enables inspection of cracks and defects through composite materials with access to only one side of the structure.
Our experts can of course help customers integrate conventional X-ray inspection systems i.e. with the structure positioned between detector and source, for bespoke applications. The EchoXRB is not a replacement for standard X-ray technique. Based on a precise implementation of backscatter techniques, it answers specific challenges in industry, such as the inspection of airplane wings or other large structures which are impossible with conventional X-ray.
EchoXRB
We designed and developed the EchoXRB to meet the need for inspection in challenging environments.
In standard X-ray setups, the X-ray source and the detector are on different sides of the object. The X-rays pass through the object before the signal is detected. EchoXRB enables a one-sided X-ray inspection set up with the source and detector on the same side of the object.
Measuring the scatter from the object instead means a lot less signal and the need for highly sophisticated algorithms. It’s a step-change more complex.
The EchoXRB backscatter system is precision engineered to capture backscatter signals. It delivers excellent performance in imaging and profilometry.
A next generation X-ray imaging system for inspection applications.
EchoXRB is a portable, robust, robot-mounted, customisable backscatter X-ray system providing imaging solutions not possible with conventional X-ray.

The original brief was to detect millimetre depths of water and sludge in stainless steel pipes and vessels in a challenging and hazardous environment.
We designed the system to be robot-mounted for automation and accessibility.
The demonstrator was developed by prioritising lowest technical risk and fastest time to market using many off-the-shelf components. The system is now commercially available for use in places where conventional X-ray imaging is impossible.
